Four Years of Achievements

Nathan Small has been a great city councilor for the people in our district. From fighting for our local neighborhoods to careful stewardship of our city's finances, Nathan has been a strong advocate for shared decision-making, public safety and a balanced approach to growth.

Fighting for Existing Neighborhoods

  • Major progress on El Molino Flood Control Project, Valley Drive reconstruction, Burn Lake master plan implementation, Amador Avenue and South Main Street reconstruction, Sewage Plant upgrades and odor reduction
  • Nearly quadrupled Road Maintenance Budget from 2007 to 2011
  • Curbside recycling
  • Reasonable impact fees on new development to cover required infrastructure
  • Nixle emergency alert and information service for city residents

Careful Financial Stewardship and Strong Economic Development

  • Twice the state-required reserve in the city General Fund
  • City budget reduced by $3.5 million in FY 2009-10 and by over and by over $4 million in FY 2010-11, without significant reduction in services
  • excellent economic growth indicators when compared with other cities in region and nation
  • High bond rating that guarantees lower interest rates for city projects
  • Full audits initiated for major city construction projects
  • Citywide Sustainability Plan that will save the city hundreds of thousands of dollars in coming years
  • New high tech and clean energy businesses attracted to and growing in Las Cruces
  • New businesses along Picacho Avenue and El Paseo, bringing over 300 new jobs to Las Cruces enhanced collaboration with NMSU and DACC for workforce training
  • Strong Council support for reinvestment in existing Las Cruces businesses as economic development strategy

Transparency in City Government

  • Frequent district, neighborhood and individual local street meetings held throughout District 4
  • City council meetings and work sessions broadcast live on cable TV and internet; archived videos available on city website
  • New city manager dedicated to enhanced communication and efficiency
  • Redistricting and other projects developed with full public participation and input
  • Strategic Plan developed and widely publicized, with regular Report Cards on progress by city staff

Important Quality of Life Improvements for City Residents

  • LEED certification for new City Hall; LEED certification and solar power for Convention Center
  • dded 77 acres of park land and 4 new parks including the Las Cruces Dog Park
  • Expanded bike and walking paths; Las Cruces Loop Trail to anchor regional network
  • New first class shotgun range where kids, families and even tourists can go for safe, fun trap & skeet shooting
  • Agreement with Elephant Butte Irrigation District for use of ditch banks as bike and walking trails waiver program for youth league fees so all children can participate
  • AskTheCity.org launched to better reach residents continued focus on Safe Routes to Schools partnership with state's Healthy Kids Initiative
  • Bicycle Friendly Community 2011
  • Farmers Market voted # 1 large market in the U. S.
  • Community Gardens program
  • Waiver program for youth league fees so all children can participate

Enhanced Public Safety

  • New police chief committed to community policing new fire station for West Mesa
  • Enhanced Neighborhood Watch program with simplified sign up options
  • Over 20 new police officers hired to enhance safety and community policing
  • Police audit system established for increased professionalism and community accountability
  • Public safety impact fee for new development to ensure police and fire services for increasing population
  • Hands free cell phone policy for drivers
