About Nathan Small

Nathan Small is seeking re-election to the Las Cruces City Council, District 4.

“We have made tremendous progress in Las Cruces over the past four years,” Small said, “especially in terms of the safety and quality of life in our existing neighborhoods. We’ve returned real accountability and control to the people of Las Cruces.”

Small pointed to fiscal responsibility as key to the city’s progress.

“In spite of difficult economic times for our state and nation, the City of Las Cruces is in excellent financial shape. We maintain twice the required reserves in our General Fund, and in the last two years have cut over 7 million dollars from the city budget without a significant reduction in services. A program of impact fees for new construction at the margins of the city will make sure resources for existing neighborhoods aren’t used to subsidize new development.”

Among Councilor Small’s special interests have been close communication with the residents of his district, improved public safety, and economic development that focuses on supporting current businesses as well as attracting new jobs. He was a leader in the establishment of a Sustainability Plan that is expected to save the city hundreds of thousands of dollars in energy costs in coming years.

As a councilor Small has organized dozens of neighborhood meetings to establish Neighborhood Watch programs, hear concerns, and engage residents in city decision-making.

“It’s important to me to listen to the people of our district,” Small said, “and to partner with them in setting priorities for the city. Residents are playing an increasingly important role in making Las Cruces a great place to live -- now and in the years to come.”

Small married Xochitl Torres of Las Cruces in 2010. He is an avid hunter and horseman, and a member of the Optimist Club and Doña Ana County Associated Sportsmen He is seeking his second term in office.
